NHS budget cuts force elderly patients to ‘block beds’

NHS spends nearly £4million a week for elderly patients in hospitals who are well enough to go home. The spending for this problem, colloquially known as ‘bed-blocking’, is feared to get worse with the NHS budget cuts. Many elderly people have to remain in hospital even after doctors have declared them fit to be discharged because they don’t have sufficient help for them at home or residential care homes.

AWA and his family are suing Margarete based Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital as hospital staff put on a “do not resuscitate” order on his medical file only because he was suffering from Down’s Syndrome. The patient and his family is suing the trust and his lawyers have filed papers at the High Court. Solicitors for the 51-year-old says the decision amounts to blatant prejudice.

Dr Samina Tahseen at Royal Derby hospital failed to identify a patient’s fallopian tube that was to be removed causing her to remove the wrong fallopian tube. The patient is now unable to conceive naturally and the doctor has been criticised by tribunal for her “hasty, careless, and dismissive attitude.”
